May Update from Congressman John AdlerDear Friend: Last November, you helped send me to Congress to fight for the families in our area. I thank you for the honor and your trust. As I pledged to you during my campaign, I am fighting everyday to provide relief to middle class families and small businesses, fix our health care crisis and make our country more energy independent. During the last three months, I've been appointed to the powerful Financial Services Committee, which gives me the opportunity to help fix our economy and build a foundation for future economic growth. In addition, my seat on the influential Veterans Affairs' Committee, allows me to advocate for the 66,000 veterans located in my district. I am proud of my role in helping to pass historic legislation that will strengthen the middle class. I fulfilled one of my campaign promises of passing an expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), which will provide an additional 116,000 New Jersey children with affordable health care. I also voted in favor of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which is the first step towards improving our economy and creating jobs in our area. I am proud that my first bill passed as a part of the Recovery package, a measure that provides a $250 economic recovery payment to our seniors and disabled veterans. Since January, the House has also passed legislation to ensure pay equity for women, help our housing market rebound, and improve our environment. Most importantly, I am constantly striving to make myself accessible and accountable to local residents. In 15 weeks, I have held 16 Congress on Your Corner events, where I meet one-on-one with constituents at a diner, library or community center. I am also working on local priorities, such as saving jobs in Burlington County, promoting the capabilities of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, protecting our beaches in Ocean County, and helping Cherry Hill schools receive additional federal funding.
