(Mt. Laurel, NJ) - Mayor Chris Myers again demonstrated his contempt for middle-class Americans yesterday by criticizing efforts to hold polluters accountable and continuing to absolve President Bush of responsibility for unprecedented high gas prices. Mark Warren, the campaign manager for John Adler, the Democratic nominee in New Jersey's 3rd Congressional District, said Myers' comments yesterday further revealed what we already know: If elected, Chris Myers will go to Washington to continue the failed policies of the George W. Bush administration.

"Mayor Myers, an incurable practioner of the old politics-as-usual blame game, continues to blame John Adler for every problem under the sun," Warren said. "Yet he staunchly sides with George W. Bush and his cronies in big oil companies at every turn. It is truly remarkable that while middle-class families in the 3rd District are struggling to fill up their gas tanks, Myers stands with big business special interests.

"In his ridiculous press release yesterday, Mayor Myers referenced a bill that increased the assessment on the transportation of certain hazardous chemicals to increase funding for state-sponsored cleanup programs. The rate had not been raised since 1987. Why would Mayor Myers object to asking transporters of hazardous materials to pay their fair share in the cleanup of spills? Can he possibly believe that those who cause the discharge of hazardous materials shouldn't be held accountable?

"If Mayor Myers is looking for someone to blame for high gas prices, he should be pointing the finger at the President, who has stood by and done NOTHING while the price of oil has quadrupled at a cost of hundreds of billions of dollars. And he has looked the other way as Big Oil has reaped enormous profits at the expense of lower and middle class residents.

"John Adler has a record of promoting alternative energy. And he has put forth a responsible plan to satisfy America's energy needs. Mayor Myers, on the other hand, has chosen to go to bat for polluters and stand by a President whose glaring failure to promote energy independence is causing enormous suffering among middle class working families in the 3rd District."
