WILLINGBORO - As first years go, U.S. Rep. John Adler's was a doozy.

He went to Washington to fight - for senior citizens, for health care reform, for a responsible banking system, and for his constituents back home. The 3rd District Democrat from Cherry Hill discussed those topics with the Burlington County Times' Editorial Board on Friday.

"It's been a fun, thrilling, exhausting and trying first year," Adler said.

Rep. John Adler, D-NJ, and two other members of Congress have asked the General Accounting Office to investigate the condition of buried piping systems at nuclear plants, after a leak of water carrying traces of radioactive tritium were detected at the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station in Lacey and a similar problem turned up at the Indian Point reactor in New York.

Rep. John Adler (D.,N.J.) today pressed for legislation he co-wrote that would provide a one-time $250 Social Security payment to senior citizens and disabled veterans to make up for the lack of a cost-of-living adjustment in benefits this year.

There are more veterans living in Ocean County than any other county in New Jersey and more veterans in Ocean County over the age of 65 than any county in the United States.

With the global economic crisis having devastated 401Ks and other investments, and the unemployment rate above 10 percent, more veterans are relying on the benefits promised to them for their military service as a lifeboat in these hard times.
