(Mount Laurel, NJ) - Considered one of the Democratic Party's top candidates to seize a Republican Congressional seat in 2008, John Adler for Congress (NJ-03) announced today that the campaign raised over $610,000 total, and has nearly $580,000 cash on hand.

Heading into 2008, Adler is running with the support of the Democratic leaders from all three 3rd District counties, and continues to amass substantial grassroots and financial backing as the campaign gets under way. The campaign has already signed up dozens of volunteers ready to make phone calls and canvass door-to-door with a message for change.

"For months, I have been listening to the concerns of voters across the district, and their message is clear," Adler said. "They are deeply worried about the direction our country is headed, and they want us to change course. They want us to bring our troops home from Iraq, make healthcare affordable and accessible, and change the way things work in Washington. They also want an end to the partisan bickering that is blocking progress at home and overseas. I believe that we can bring change to our government, but I know it will take hard work."

"If elected, I will fight to give our taxpayers the voice they deserve and put their interests first. I am honored to have the support of the people who have already joined the campaign whether financially or offering their time to volunteer. This early support of my campaign shows just how eager New Jersey families are for a new direction."

Recreational Fishing Alliance Endorses Adler for Congress

(Ocean County, NJ) - Citing his outstanding record on recreational fishing issues and commitment to protecting the marine environment, the Recreational Fishing Alliance today endorsed State Senator John Adler for U.S. Congress in New Jersey's 3rd District race.

"John Adler is a staunch advocate of the marine environment and, as a member of the state legislature, has actively supported the recreational fishing community," said Jim Donofrio, Executive Director of the nonpartisan Recreational Fishing Alliance.

"Our experience working with Senator Adler has assured us that he is deeply committed to the well-being of the recreational sector and that he will take the concerns of the recreational fishing community to Washington."

"Sen. Adler has demonstrated the commitment, knowledge and leadership that will help him fight in Congress to secure the long-term preservation of our marine resources, as well as to maintain angler access and promote a clean marine environment for fishing," continued Donofrio.

"I am honored to receive this endorsement and look forward to working with recreational fishermen in the district to bring their concerns to Washington," Adler said. "Your support is a reflection of my personal commitment to strengthen the fishing community and preserve the environment."

As a member of the New Jersey state Legislature, Senator Adler:

* Supported the elimination of the commercial menhaden reduction fishery in state waters;
* Advocated gamefish status for Atlantic striped bass in New Jersey state waters;
* Sponsored legislation to prohibit pots and reefs being set on New Jersey artificial reefs;
* Sponsored a recreational fishing license plate to generate funds for the Division of Fish and Wildlife and offset the need for a federal or state saltwater fishing license;
* Supported the protection of open space to limit pollutants entering our bays and estuaries;
* Supported provisions to improve water quality.

"Based on his voting record in the New Jersey Legislature and his ability to work in a bi-partisan way to get things done, we believe Senator Adler is the best candidate to represent the fishermen of the 3rd district," continued Donofrio. "If elected to Congress, Senator Adler will be a strong voice in Washington on issues concerning recreational fishermen. This will put New Jersey's fishermen in a very advantageous position."

The RFA also believes John Adler's election to Congress will benefit the state of New Jersey because it would give the state a second strong congressional advocate on issues critical to our fishing community. Democratic Representative Frank Pallone (D-6th) is a senior member of the House Natural Resources Committee and a longtime champion of recreational fishing.

"Rep. Pallone has long stood up to government agencies that attempted to implement unnecessary and excessive regulations on recreational fishermen and biases toward commercial fishing interests," said Donofrio.

"We believe it is also imperative to fill the 3rd District congressional seat with someone who will fight on behalf of the recreational fishing community. John Adler is that candidate."

The association will hold town meetings throughout New Jersey in the coming months to discuss issues such as summer flounder, tautog, and the need to amend the Magnuson Act, our nation's primary fisheries law. We have extended an invitation to Senator Adler to attend these important meetings to gain an even greater understanding of the issues affecting us."

"New Jersey's Third congressional district has long been at the epicenter of the debate over issues involving the management of our marine resources. Electing an effective advocate such as John Adler to Congress will go a long way toward achieving our goals."

NJ's 3rd Congressional District Now a Toss-Up

Following news last week that Congressman Jim Saxton would retire at the end of the current term, several leading political analysts have upgraded New Jersey's Third Congressional District to "toss-up" status for the 2008 elections.

Stuart Rothenberg added the 3rd District to the list of "Pure Toss-Up" districts in his November 9 update to his 2008 House Ratings, making it among the top six best opportunities nationwide for Democrats to pick up a Republican House seat.

On November 13, Chris Cillizza of the Washington Post, added New Jersey's 3rd District to the list of seven major pickup targets for Democrats in 2008. He summed up the district by saying, "This is a very tough hold for Republicans -- especially in a presidential year. Republicans note that they made gains in Burlington County in last week's state elections including winning an open state Senate seat. Combine the district's Democratic tendencies, the huge cost of television advertising and the huge financial lead national Democrats hold over their Republican counterparts, however, and this seat looks ripe for the taking."

Finally, the Cook Report today upgraded the 3rd District from "Likely Republican" to "Republican Toss Up", placing it among the seven most likely districts to switch from Republican to Democrat.

Adler Urges Legislative Ethics Committee to Open Up Records

For Immediate Release: November 15th, 2007

TRENTON - Senator John H. Adler, a member of the Joint Legislative Committee on Ethical Standards, today said that the Committee's records regarding complaints against lawmakers should be made open and available to the public prior to Committee consideration.

"We need some way for the public to be included when it comes to hearings regarding the conduct of legislators," said Senator Adler, D-Cherry Hill, after attending an Ethics Committee hearing today. "This Ethics Committee is broken. We need real reform of the entire system. I think opening up ethics complaints to real public scrutiny will help fix many of the current problems."

Under existing procedures, complaints against lawmakers are considered subject to the Open Public Records Act (OPRA), which allows members of the public to petition for access to government records. However, Senator Adler argued that the Committee often bases its decisions on ethics matters on materials prepared by the Office of Legislative Services staff. The Senator also noted that, to access even those materials which are currently considered public documents, New Jersey's citizens would need to go through the OPRA process, which may be confusing and time-consuming.

"The system is very much broken, and could benefit from a healthy dose of public scrutiny and transparency," said Senator Adler. "The public should be able to view the information provided to Ethics Committee members, and come to their own conclusions about the decisions we make as a panel. We should provide easy access to this information - possibly through the Legislature's Web site - so that New Jerseyans don't need to sift through needless bureaucracy to know what's really the public's business."

Senator Adler requested that the Ethics Committee staff prepare a memo on opening up Committee records to the public, and added that he would introduce legislation if necessary.

"It's in the public's best interest to be informed about the actions of their representatives," said Senator Adler.

Saxton's Retirement + Senator John Adler=Good News for Ocean Democrats!

The recent announcement that Congressman Saxton plans to retire is good news for Ocean County Democrats who were already excited by the announcement that Democratic State Senator John Adler would run for Congress in 2008. Senator Adler brings experience both as a legislator and a campaigner to the race.

Adler has been named one of the state's ten best legislators by New Jersey Magazine, which called him "hardworking, incisive, and respected by both parties." PoliticsNJ.com lists the Senator among New Jersey's smartest state legislators, calling him "persuasive and respected." And just last month, the Philadelphia Inquirer said he has an exemplary record in the State Senate.

Says Ocean County Chairman Wyatt Earp:

With John Adler's name on the ticket, I am confident that we can win New Jersey's third congressional district in 2008. I look forward to working with John and fighting to change direction in Ocean County.

Says Former Congressional Candidate Richard Sexton:

I fully support John Adler for Congress and look forward to him representing our district in the U.S. House of Representatives. I have known John for many years and know that he will represent all of the people in this district on issues like health care for children, veterans' benefits and economic growth. Just as importantly, he is a good person who will do the right thing and not the politically expedient thing. We need people like John Adler in Washington.
