LTE: Glad they voted against raise

Burlington County Times

Kudos to Congressmen John Adler and Patrick Murphy for voting against an automatic pay raise for themselves and other members of Congress.

It is heartwarming to know that they have taken into account the fact that we seniors did not receive a cost-of-living adjustment despite the increases in prescription drugs and property taxes (Burlington County Times, Jan. 29).

It feels good to know that someone in government is looking out for the American people instead of their own selfish self-interests.

County and municipal officials in New Jersey today were counting the cost of two expensive, back-to-back snow storms so they can apply for federal emergency funding to replenish hammered snow removal budgets.

TRENTON — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has declared a state of emergency for seven South Jersey counties battered by Saturday's snowstorm.

Tuesday's declaration will allow the state to apply to the federal government for money to help pay the costs associated with the storm, which dumped 2 feet of snow in much of southern New Jersey. More than 30,000 homes and businesses were still without power Tuesday.

The declaration applies to Camden, Gloucester, Salem, Cape May, Cumberland, Atlantic and Burlington counties.

President Barack Obama declared a major disaster for Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester, Ocean, and Salem counties Friday in response to the snowstorm that blanketed the area Dec. 19 and 20, while legislators are already calling for disaster aid to deal with this weekend's weather.

The declaration adds federal aid to state and local recovery efforts in those counties, paying for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the storm.

A Moorestown woman walked through the halls of Congress last week, lobbying for something far more important to her than a political favor.
For three days, Judith Young visited the offices of 250 of the 435 members of the House of Representatives.

A determined Young was trying to find more co-sponsors for a House bill that would establish a national monument to honor mothers who have lost sons and daughters in service to the country.
