We Americans have a proud history of rising to meet great challenges. John Adler wants to help meet the challenge of global warming and lead America into a cleaner, greener future. Protecting the environment often seems complicated, but the easy part is understanding that the earth is our home, and it's the only home we have. For the past eight years, George Bush has promised to move to cleaner forms of energy. Despite his promises, Bush has always walked hand-in-hand with Big Oil. The American people are eager for leadership and progress on these issues. John Adler understands that there can be no compromise when it comes to clean air, clean water, and green spaces. As a member of Congress, John will fight for these basic concepts the same way he has fought for them in the New Jersey Senate, with the ability to see what needs to be done and to make it happen.
- Drilling for oil a few miles off of New Jersey is a mid-20th century response to a 21st century problem. It will do nothing to reduce the cost of gasoline or our nation's carbon emissions, while polluting our beaches and restricting fishing in large stretches of our ocean. John Adler has continually opposed proposals to drill for oil along New Jersey's coasts, and he will fight to hold Bush Republicans and their friends in Big Oil to the 68 million acres of land already allocated for drilling domestically.
- Scientists agree that the earth is getting warmer and people are causing that warming by using fuels that emit carbon into the atmosphere. That means that New Jersey will see some major changes over the next century that will affect our coastal communities, the crops we grow, and the health of our senior citizens. John Adler will work on solutions for reducing climate change and adapting our economy to it. Climate change is a challenge, but it is also a tremendous opportunity.
- We can reduce the impact of global warming by reducing carbon emissions. This means generating electricity from renewable, domestic solar and wind power, not from coal. John Adler believes we need to invest in wind, solar, bio-diesel, geothermal and other sources of renewable energy to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and fossil fuels. He sponsored New Jersey's cap and trade program for carbon emissions to help make the transition away from coal power, and in Congress he will create a national cap and trade program to reduce carbon emissions nationwide.

- John Adler will work to establish the renewable electricity standard at 25 percent for renewable energy sources such as wind and solar by 2025. He believes Congress should provide tax incentives for energy-efficient buildings and appliances and set new mileage standards for all cars at 40 miles per gallon. He will seek carbon-neutral federal offices. Half of the energy used by the federal government goes toward powering over 500,000 federal buildings around the country, at a cost to taxpayers of more than $5 billion.
- John Adler will also work to reduce carbon coming from our cars. John was the prime sponsor of the "New Jersey Clean Cars Act," which adopted the California auto emissions standards into New Jersey law. Because air pollution does not stop at state borders, John will work in Congress to ensure that the entire nation has cars that are as clean as the ones being sold in California and New Jersey.
- Ultra-clean fuel cell cars that run on hydrogen are already available in California but can't be sold nationwide because the only hydrogen refueling stations are in California. John Adler will work to create a national "hydrogen highway" like the one Governor Schwarzenegger is building in California, which would provide a cleaner alternative to traditional, gas-powered cars.
- Energy conservation is the cleanest "fuel." We need to continue the federal tax breaks that encourage people to make their homes and businesses more energy efficient.
- Smart Growth policies, like the transit villages and open space preservation that John Adler has fought for in New Jersey, reduce your commutes and conserve energy. John will work to make Smart Growth a national policy.
We are a great nation largely because we have conquered great challenges. John knows that we can - and we will - solve the energy crisis facing us today. We can recharge our economy and lead the world into a stronger economic future by investing in a self-sufficient, independent clean energy program that creates jobs here at home, saves middle-class families and small businesses money, and makes America energy-independent.
